One person is dead following a traffic accident shortly after noon Friday on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway in South Kohala. One lane of the highway is closed while Hawaii County Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit officers investigate the crash.

One person is dead following a traffic accident shortly after noon Friday on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway in South Kohala. One lane of the highway is closed while Hawaii County Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit officers investigate the crash.

The crash occurred about 1/4-mile east, or mauka, of the highway’s intersection with Mamalahoa Highway, also known as Highway 190, in South Kohala, according to police. Police confirmed a fatality in the crash.

No additional details were immediately available.

Eastbound traffic on Daniel K. Inouye Highway is being detoured to Old Saddle Road. The westbound lane of the highway remains open.

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area, if possible, and to proceed with caution if traveling near the area because emergency crews are on scene.
